CBD Could Be Gamer Changer In The Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis.

There is a progressive neurological disease, which impacts hundreds and thousands of people around the world. It is one of the most widespread conditions affecting the central nervous system, the brain and spinal cord.

An estimated over 100,000 people in the United Kingdom, and more than two and a half million people across the globe, are living with the disease. But, how much do we know about Multiple sclerosis or MS, and how do we treat it?

Multiple sclerosis is an inflammatory demyelinating complaint, brought on by damage to the fatty material insulating the nerves in the body, called the Myelin. Thissubstance lets the nerves transmit impulses quickly, determining how smoothly, rapidly, and efficiently you perform certain movements.

However, if you experience demyelination, a loss of myelin, it could adversely affect nerves conducting electrical impulses to and from the brain, causing numerous symptoms of Multiple sclerosis. The parts of the brain which have lost myelin, known as lesions or plaques, can appear as hardened, otherwise referred to as scar sections`, which can be seen at different parts of the brain and spinal cord, at different times. As a matter of fact, multiple sclerosis actually translates as `many scars. Hence the name.

Tragically, the disease widely affects young people in their twenties and thirties, which may begin with individual attacks or what are known as exacerbations or progressing gradually. Medical experts may not fully understand what causes the condition but feels genetics and environment may play a role.

Those living with MS can display a broad section of symptoms. Ranging from tingling sensations, otherwise referred to as pins and needles, to weakness of the limbs, unsteadiness, blurred vision, amongst others. If you struggle with the condition, you know there are points when you may be in remission, or experience a relapse, often making it hard to see what’s coming around the corner and plan for the future.

There are many different treatments and medicines people take to alleviate the symptoms of MS and live with the condition. However, it will not surprise you to learn, in the past few years, many have explored the possibility of using cannabis-derived medicines, both synthetic and Phyto cannabinoid based, to fight the effects of the disease.

Medicinal cannabis is especially thought to be effective in treating the common symptoms spasticity, or stiffness, and chronic pain, which can make life misery for people suffering from MS.

Last year, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), advised using a THC: CBD spray to treat spasticity, if a patient notes at least a decrease of the symptoms of around one in five, after trialling the spray for a month, although only a specialist clinician can approve and prescribe the medication.

According to a survey carried out by the MS Society (UK), 20% of those asked said they would use a cannabis-based medicine to treat their symptoms, while those surveyed also said medical cannabis had assisted with their pain, muscles spasms and spasticity.

Many see the results as a sign cannabinoid can be a major force in the treatment of the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis. Some feel there may be room for further research, but by adhering to present UK recommendations, medical cannabis and cannabinoids could become a major force in the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis. It could be a game-changer! Let us see.
